Post and Ladies Auxiliary Awards and Recognitions 2002-2003 - Page 2

The 2003 Department Convention was notable for the entire John Lyon family as awards were presented during the Thursday evening Awards Ceremony. At the top of the list was the All State designation and the "white hats" presented to 2002-2003 Commander Richard Hoffman and Quartermaster Kenneth Jansen, and the Ladies Auxiliary Banner presented to 2002-2003 President Gail Hoffman.

John Lyon Post also received the first place Richard Guager Americanism Award and the first place Clair B. Poff Public Relations Award for Outstanding Newsletter in the Department. The Ladies Auxiliary newsletter also received the first place for the best newsletter in the Department. John Lyon also received a plaque for sponsoring the state Voice of Democracy (VOD) winner and a membership award for the largest Post in Category C (Posts with 201 to 500 members). The Ladies Auxiliary also received the first place honors for the best promotion of the VOD program. The Post and Auxiliary also received other Department awards and certificates.

J. Gary Wagner received the George C. Dalby Award. Established in 1958 in honor of its namesake, "Mr. VFW" as he was then known, the award is presented annually for "outstanding participation in VFW programs". J. Gary Wagner said: "This is particularly meaningful as George Dalby was a member of Post 3150, and it was time to bring the award back home, at least for a while."

At the Convention banquet, 3150 members received two National awards: Cathy Kerns – for her work as Membership Chairman for the Tenth District, and J. Gary Wagner – for his work as Department Americanism Chairman.

Left to right, John Lyon members Connie Agresti, Jodi LaFreniere-Dajc, J. Gary Wagner, Richard Hoffman, Gail Hoffman, Ken Jansen, Jeannie Gibadlo, Cathy Kerns, and Cathy Graham attended the Department Convention in Richmond. They are seen with some of the awards earned by John Lyon Post and Auxiliary. Also attending were "Doc" Crouch, Joanne Jansen, Jim and Muriel Kerr, and David Dajc making it one of 3150's larger delegations in some time.

The Banner is presented to Ladies Auxiliaries in the state that meet all prescribed requirements during the year. The Ladies Auxiliary's waving flag won the first place blue ribbon in Promotional Category in the annual Buddy Poppy competition. The stylized U.S. flag is made from about 100 colored Buddy Poppies. The banner at the top highlights yesterday (1899, the VFW's beginnings), today (2003), and tomorrow. The normally green poppy centers have been painted white and placed back in blue poppies for the 50 stars. Also seen is Cathy Kerns' National Award for Membership as the Tenth District Senior Vice President.
